Metal Braces

These are traditional braces which contains high grade stainless steel brackets and wires. With the help of elastics, wire is held inside the brackets. Till few years back it used to be a common type of braces, but no more. Due to recent advances and availability of new clear braces option it’s use is getting declined.

For esthetically conscious patients this may not be best option, as they are easily noticed while talking and smiling.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic Braces are relatively clear in comparison to metal braces. When an aesthetic requirement of patients is mild to moderate they can opt for ceramic braces, as they can’t be recognised from a distance. Another point to notice here is that treatment duration with these braces is little longer in comparison with metal braces. Ceramic braces are brittle material, so you need to take extra caution with them. Eating hard food with ceramic will chip-off ceramic brackets and unnecessarily increase emergency clinic visits.

Self Ligating Braces

Traditional braces uses elastics that holds wire inside the brackets. This elastics creates more pressure and friction which in turn results in less efficient tooth movement and longer treatment duration. These elastics have a tendency to collect food particles on it’s surface which results in poor oral hygiene.

Self Ligating braces don’t require elastics to hold wire in place , instead wires are held in place by sliding doors in the bracket.

Retainers

Retainers are given at the end of orthodontic treatment. The function of retainer is to hold the teeth in newly moved position till the bone and tissues around the teeth get adapted to their new position. Without use of retainers teeth tends to move back to original position. Therefore it is very critical to use retainers after completion of orthodontic treatment. The types and use of retainers will be explained to you in detail by your orthodontist.

Early Orthodontic Treatment / Phase I Treatment

This treatment helps at a stage when children’s jaws are still actively growing and teeth are easier to move. This early treatment can result in shorter treatment duration at later stage while decreasing severity of malocclusion.

Not all children need early orthodontic treatment, however having early orthodontic consultation with orthodontist will be beneficial.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder Treatment (TMJ)

TMJ is responsible for opening and closing of mouth, chewing and biting. When this joint is over stressed it can cause pain and tenderness, clicking noises, headache, ear aches and even locking of jaws. The above mentioned symptoms are associated with temporomandibular joint disorder.

The cause of TMJ disorder includes malocclusion, stress, teeth grinding and clenching. Orthodontic treatment is effective for TMJ disorder as it will align the teeth and will help to achieve proper functional occlusion. This in turn allows optimal jaw position. Wearing night guards will help in preventing grinding and clenching of teeth, which in turn reduce the stress on TMJ
